It began in 1981, when the Moody Bible Institute was first asked to build a Christian radio station in Hilo. Motorola engineer Daniel Schwarz organized the first meeting, held in the Plumeria Room of the Hilo Lagoon Hotel & Restaurant. Present were Daniel Schwarz & Pastor Bob Vance of Grace Baptist Church, and Kahu Tom Kalili & Miles Matsumura of Berean Bible Church.
The groundbreaking service was held on December 26, 1995, with the Rev. Alex
Pacheco of New Hope Christian Fellowship - Puna giving the blessing.
Construction followed with volunteer laborers provided by the above
churches, as well as numerous other churches and individuals who gave
generously to complete the project.
On
January 20, 1997, Moody Radio of Hilo went on the air. Two weeks
later, supporters gathered to dedicate the radio station, with the sermon
and blessing given by the Rev. Al Soliven of Hilo Alliance Church. The
station was named in memory of Kahu Thomas K. Kalili, who went to be with
the Lord just seven months earlier. The service was carried live on MBN's
"Open Line" with radio pastor C. Donald Cole.

We have said more than once that never had we been met with warmer hospitality than by you. It rained all week, but we remember Hilo not for the weather but for the outpouring of love that we experienced at your hands.

As you can imagine, the cost of almost everything -- electricity, equipment, labor, gas, etc -- is more expensive in Hawaii, and continues to increase.
