MOODY'S PRESIDENT RESIGNS
Chicago, IL (05-28-2008) - Dr. Michael Easley has announced his resignation from the Office of President of Moody Bible Institute, effective June 30, 2008. Over the past year, Dr. Easley has suffered from severe back pain that has already once required him to take an extended leave of absence for surgery, and he now appears to need further medical attention.
"After
much thought, prayer, and consultation, I have asked the Board of Trustees
of the Moody Bible Institute to relieve me of my duties as President so that
I may devote more time and energy seeking medical treatment for my back,"
said Dr. Easley in a letter to the Moody community. "Surgery has already
once interrupted my tenure for several weeks, and unfortunately it has
become clear that more treatment is required. I have come to the difficult
conclusion that under the circumstances I cannot be as effective a President
as the Institute deserves." The Moody Board of Trustees reluctantly accepted his resignation and has asked that Dr. Easley serve as President Emeritus through the end of the 2009 school year. A prepared statement from Easley adds the new position will relieve him of administrative responsibilities, but will also allow "...for me to continue to represent the Institute, as I am able, preaching at churches and conferences and on the radio, as well as maintaining relationships with donors."
Earlier this month, Moody Radio launched a new daily 24:00-minute teaching program, inContext with Michael Easley. Tim Svoboda, Executive Producer for the Moody Radio-produced program says plans call for inContext to continue in production and on the air at least through May 2009.
News of Dr. Easley's resignation was announced on Moody Radio during this afternoon's Chris Fabry Live! program, where Moody's Chief Operating Officer Ed Cannon and Trustee board chairman Jerry Jenkins discussed the decision and upcoming transition. At last report, Dr. Easley will talk with Greg Wheatley on Prime Time America on Friday, May 30.
At Moody Bible Institute, staff, faculty and students have been encouraged to first focus on Dr. Easley and his wife, Cindy, as well as their four children: Hanna, Jessie, Devin, and Sarah. Friends of Moody are also encouraged to remember the Easley family in their prayers, and to pray for Dr. Easley's health.
